I've Been a Bad, Bad Girl...NEW BOOKS!

So you know how I mentioned NOT needing to bring any additional books into the house??? Well, then, like a day later a buddy of mine let me pilfer through her stack of ARCs and some more books LEAPT into my arms, and we all came home, one bigger, happier family.

The new acquisitions are...

 

How to Be a Woman, by Caitlin Moran, has gotten quite the mixed bag of reviews. Also, doesn't she look more than a little like she borrowed Helena Bonham Carter's stylist for the day? 

Drop Dead Healthy, by A.J. Jacobs, will go on the TBR right next to The Year of Living Biblically. 




Eight Girls Taking Pictures, by Whitney Otto, has a great cover!!! Shallow reason, I know, but whatev. Also, I really liked the film adaptation of Otto's book How to Make An American Quilt, so we'll see how her writing goes over. 

The Lost Art of Mixing, by Erica Bauermeister, is foodie fiction. Enough said. 


The Stockholm Octavo, by Karen Engelman, sounds atmospheric and mysterious. And I keep seeing reviews of it pop up all over, too. Might as well give it a go!

And finally, the ever-lovely Trish let me borrow her copy of B.A. Shapiro's The Art Forger because I wasn't able to get ahold of it before our book club meeting. I'm a sucker for fiction involving art, so I'm really looking forward to this one (soon, very soon).

  1. Oh I'm a HUGE fan of Caitlin Moran and that book! It isn't going to be for everyone but it if is your cup of tea, you'll just love it to pieces.

    And I'm a huge A.J. Jacobs fan but this one felt a bit scattered.

    1. Jenners, I've seen the warnings about the Moran book, and I'm not scared by the F word, so I think we'll get along just fine. In fact, I'm thinking of ditching my current read in favor of this one. It's just too sloggy to waste my time!

      And I may start with The Year of Living Biblically.

  2. I loved How To Be a Woman, it's hilarious!! And How To Make an American Quilt was great so will check out Eight Girls. Hope you enjoy all your books!

  4. I'm going to read The Lost Art of Mixing - I enjoyed her other books. I just bought some books myself : The Orchardist, The Aviator's Wife, and Quiet. Pre-ordered Call Me Zelda. Gotta fill up my new bookshelves.

    I remember reading Portnoy's Complaint for what felt like forever, too--and I think I didn't even finish it, in the end.

  6. Books are so darn sneaky! They'll jump into your arms and insist you take them home. No guilt necessary because they just don't give you a choice :-)

  8. My husband was standing in our den the other day looking around...he said, "You know what we really need around here is more books." :P He's so sassy!
    I rewarded his sarcasm with a shipment from Amazon :)

  9. Gahhh, look at all of those books that I want to read ;) AJ Jacobs makes me snort laugh and I'm dying of curiosity about Eight Girls. The Moran..meh. I was one of those gals that just didn't get it, lol. I do hope you like it though! I really enjoyed The Art Forger, hope you do as well.

    1. Jennifer, I jumped into How to Be a Woman last night. She's very funny, but we'll see how it stands up to a whole book of funny/feminism. I've read so many women's studies type books when I was in college, I often have the "been there done that" feeling when I read them now.

      Looking forward to AJ Jacobs, for sure!

  13. Dude! That Caitlin Moran was a snag! I really hope you enjoy The Art Forger. If nothing else it's a pretty fast-paced read. That's always a plus!

    1. I'm kind of loving her so far, and truthfully I had my doubts. I've read my weight in women's studies and feminist books over the years, but I like the really personal, hilarious spin she puts on these essays. Hoping the goodness lasts all the way through.

  15. A.J. Jacobs! He cracks me up. I once dated a guy for a month based on starting up a conversation over a copy of "A Life of Living Biblically" that I was reading at my favorite bar. :)

  16. I just finished The Lost Art of Mixing and while I enjoyed it, I think The School of Essential Ingredients is my favorite of Bauermeister's. You might want to read it first since The Lost Art of Mixing is the follow-up, revealing more about the characters' situations from the first book. And, there's not quite as much foodie content as in the first. :(

    I had to go to the library the other day and walked out with A Good American (Alex George), Sharp Objects (Gillian Flynn) and Wish You Were Here (Stewart O'Nan). My mom sent me her copy of Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Quindlen, as well. I don't feel too bad since my focus in January was to read older books from my shelves, which I did with the exception of one ARC. Woot!!

    1. Maybe I need to go back and read The School of Essential Ingredients first. I picked it up from the library a gazillion years ago, but I had to return it before I'd finished reading.
