The new acquisitions are...
How to Be a Woman, by Caitlin Moran, has gotten quite the mixed bag of reviews. Also, doesn't she look more than a little like she borrowed Helena Bonham Carter's stylist for the day?
Drop Dead Healthy, by A.J. Jacobs, will go on the TBR right next to The Year of Living Biblically.
Eight Girls Taking Pictures, by Whitney Otto, has a great cover!!! Shallow reason, I know, but whatev. Also, I really liked the film adaptation of Otto's book How to Make An American Quilt, so we'll see how her writing goes over.
The Lost Art of Mixing, by Erica Bauermeister, is foodie fiction. Enough said.
The Stockholm Octavo, by Karen Engelman, sounds atmospheric and mysterious. And I keep seeing reviews of it pop up all over, too. Might as well give it a go!
And finally, the ever-lovely Trish let me borrow her copy of B.A. Shapiro's The Art Forger because I wasn't able to get ahold of it before our book club meeting. I'm a sucker for fiction involving art, so I'm really looking forward to this one (soon, very soon).
Currently Reading: Portnoy's Complaint...for what feels like forever.

Oh I'm a HUGE fan of Caitlin Moran and that book! It isn't going to be for everyone but it if is your cup of tea, you'll just love it to pieces.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a huge A.J. Jacobs fan but this one felt a bit scattered.
Jenners, I've seen the warnings about the Moran book, and I'm not scared by the F word, so I think we'll get along just fine. In fact, I'm thinking of ditching my current read in favor of this one. It's just too sloggy to waste my time!
DeleteAnd I may start with The Year of Living Biblically.
I loved How To Be a Woman, it's hilarious!! And How To Make an American Quilt was great so will check out Eight Girls. Hope you enjoy all your books!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad, Willa! I think I'm going to read it next to counteract all the penises in Portnoy's Complaint. Whahaha!
DeleteI think you get to feel guilt-free about this one. You didn't buy any books...you just helped them find a new home, for free!
ReplyDeleteI read a really positive review of Eight Girls Taking Pictures. I hope you love it. :)
Lindsey, oh I wish I was guilt free. I'm guilt-freer than usual, I suppose. lol
DeleteI'm going to read The Lost Art of Mixing - I enjoyed her other books. I just bought some books myself : The Orchardist, The Aviator's Wife, and Quiet. Pre-ordered Call Me Zelda. Gotta fill up my new bookshelves.
ReplyDeleteOoh, new shelves are so wonderful and tempting!!! Enjoy your new books, Becca. I haven't read anything of Bauermeister's so I'm looking forward to it.
DeleteYou got some great ones!
ReplyDeleteI remember reading Portnoy's Complaint for what felt like forever, too--and I think I didn't even finish it, in the end.
Thanks, Ali! I laid Portnoy aside without guilt yesterday. Just couldn't stand it anymore. I'm reading How to Be a Woman as an antidote. lol
DeleteBooks are so darn sneaky! They'll jump into your arms and insist you take them home. No guilt necessary because they just don't give you a choice :-)
ReplyDeleteAren't they, Tanya Patrice?! I thought about you yesterday when I dipped back into Corsets & Clockwork. I ran across that collection on your blog ages ago.
DeleteWhat a lovely post! Enjoy your reading!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Barbara!
DeleteMy husband was standing in our den the other day looking around...he said, "You know what we really need around here is more books." :P He's so sassy!
ReplyDeleteI rewarded his sarcasm with a shipment from Amazon :)
Looks like you got some great ones here...I can't wait to read Moran.
LOL, nice! I love sassy. And I love your "revenge" of an Amazon shipment. lol
DeleteMoran is going well so far. I dove into it last night.
Gahhh, look at all of those books that I want to read ;) AJ Jacobs makes me snort laugh and I'm dying of curiosity about Eight Girls. The Moran..meh. I was one of those gals that just didn't get it, lol. I do hope you like it though! I really enjoyed The Art Forger, hope you do as well.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week of reading!
Jennifer, I jumped into How to Be a Woman last night. She's very funny, but we'll see how it stands up to a whole book of funny/feminism. I've read so many women's studies type books when I was in college, I often have the "been there done that" feeling when I read them now.
DeleteLooking forward to AJ Jacobs, for sure!
I want to read them all. Curse you and your book haul!
ReplyDeleteLOL, Brooke!
DeleteYou have bunches of great looking books! Enjoy them all :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sheila!
DeleteOh my, but they are such lovely books. And Caitlin Moran is soooo funny!
ReplyDeleteShe is pretty hilarious, Lisa. I've laughed out loud several times and I've only read the intro and part of Chapter 1!
DeleteDude! That Caitlin Moran was a snag! I really hope you enjoy The Art Forger. If nothing else it's a pretty fast-paced read. That's always a plus!
ReplyDeleteRight-o! Spoken in a British accent like Caitlin Moran. And speaking of snags, I'm totally jealous of your Silver Sparrow find! Looking forward to The Art Forger! I'm still cleansing my reading palate after stupid Portnoy.
DeleteCaitlin Moran actually talks about her hair in her other book, Moranthology. She's great. What a fantastic pile of books. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of loving her so far, and truthfully I had my doubts. I've read my weight in women's studies and feminist books over the years, but I like the really personal, hilarious spin she puts on these essays. Hoping the goodness lasts all the way through.
DeleteA.J. Jacobs! He cracks me up. I once dated a guy for a month based on starting up a conversation over a copy of "A Life of Living Biblically" that I was reading at my favorite bar. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL, that sounds like an excellent basis for a month-long relationship. Not even being sarcastic. That's kinda dreamy.
DeleteI just finished The Lost Art of Mixing and while I enjoyed it, I think The School of Essential Ingredients is my favorite of Bauermeister's. You might want to read it first since The Lost Art of Mixing is the follow-up, revealing more about the characters' situations from the first book. And, there's not quite as much foodie content as in the first. :(
ReplyDeleteI had to go to the library the other day and walked out with A Good American (Alex George), Sharp Objects (Gillian Flynn) and Wish You Were Here (Stewart O'Nan). My mom sent me her copy of Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake by Quindlen, as well. I don't feel too bad since my focus in January was to read older books from my shelves, which I did with the exception of one ARC. Woot!!
Maybe I need to go back and read The School of Essential Ingredients first. I picked it up from the library a gazillion years ago, but I had to return it before I'd finished reading.
DeleteGo you! Reading older books from your shelves! That's what my year looks like. lol
I have 2 friends whose reading tastes are very similar to mine who both liked and hated Caitlen Moran, so I am interested to see what my reaction will be when I finally get there.
